We Hear You provides one-to-one creative therapy or art therapy sessions for people of all ages in Frome. This is similar to counselling, with the addition of creative methods and a range of materials, which you will be supported to use by practitioners trained in these ways of working. You do not need to have had previous experience of working in this way to access this type of therapy.
What is creative therapy?
Creative therapy emphasises the nurturing of personal growth and change. As adults we rarely have the opportunity to be creative or behave spontaneously. Creative therapy enables us to get in touch with these old skills. This can help us learn more about the parts of ourselves left unexplored, as well as enabling us to better understand the people and the situation we are in. This is both a conscious and unconscious process.
Creative therapy incorporates the "dramatic" as a means in which to explore and nurture the creativity and immediacy of both the body and mind. Techniques may include: Character Work, Storymaking, Image Use, Movement, Games, Improvisation, Role Play and Object Work. The psychological needs of a client are supported, allowing them to be identified and worked through in a safe and supportive environment and in a non-directive manner.
What is art therapy?
Art therapy is a type of psychotherapy that combines the use of art materials with talking as a method of expression and communication. The process of creating images and other art work with the support of a therapist can help people to acknowledge, explore and address their emotions. Sometimes it can be difficult to express complex feelings using words and art can provide another way to think about things. New meanings and understanding can emerge as the art work provides an external focus, which can be reflected on as sessions progress.
Art therapy practice has evolved to reflect the cultural and social diversity of the people who engage in it. Sessions are non-directive so people can express themselves in a way that feels appropriate for them. A range of art materials are provided including coloured pens, pastels and crayons, paints, and clay. Art therapy is not a recreational activity or an art lesson, although the sessions can be enjoyable.
